IUI(Intrauterine Insemination)
IUI has gained a lot of popularity in the recent past in our country. It is very important to understand that it is not an artificial treatment and the pregnancy occurs in a natural way. In this treatment the wife is given some medicines, which may include injections to promote multiple egg formation. Ultrasound is performed on day 12 of menstrual cycle. Once the size of follicles containing eggs is reached 18-25mm a different type of injection is given to break the follicles. Once the follicles are broken the eggs become available for pregnancy. On next two days the husband gives semen to the IUI lab. In the IUI lab the semen is passed through a scientific procedure through which the best moving sperms are isolated from the specimen. The isolated sperms are then transferred into the uterus of wife with the help of a special tube to the point where the eggs are already present and ready for fertilization. This treatment has satisfactory success rates if performed carefully and the patient selection is appropriate. This treatment is not effective in patients with blocked tubes. IUI often results in single pregnancy but twin pregnancy may also occur.
